the defense secretary robert gates is in iraq meeting with u.s. troops as they formally end their combat mission there. gates's plan touched down hours after president obama told americans it was time to turn the page on iraq. fewer than 50 nourks troops rema remain. president obama did not declare victory in iraq but did say the u.s. gave the iraqi people a chance to shape their future. tracie potts has the latest from washington. >> reporter: now with the military operation in iraq over, president obama says our next big mission is right here at home. >> the american combat mission in iraq has ended. >> reporter: with dwcombat troo out of iraq, he announced a new mission. >> restore our economy and put the millions of americans back to work. >> reporter: he blamed massive deficits of financing a decade of war with borrowed money. his focus now, jobs and afghanistan. >> open-ended war serves neither our interests nor the afghan peoples. >> reporter: republicans criticize the president for opposing the bush surge that turned it around in iraq. >> some leaders who fought tooth and nail to

on the beach ahead of the storm. >> tom kierein joins us now to see if the storms will affect our weather. >> it certainly is for our viewers that live on the bay and the eastern shore tomorrow. as we take a look at the satellite view, earl does continue to intensify. it is a powerful storm with winds of 140-mile-an-hour. we'll get the latest updated track in about 20 minutes and i'll show that you. here's the latest track, category 4 storm, winds moving north/northwest at 16. that would bring it right near cape hatteras by around midnight tonight. and by 8:00 on friday morning, it would be just to the east of aci teague about and just by noon friday, just east of the delaware bay. and by 8:00 p.m. friday, just off of long island right near martha's vineyard and nantucket and later friday night moving over eastern new england, cape cod and then moving away. it does appear it could be brushing right along our atlantic seaboard tomorrow. there is a hurricane watch out where you see those areas in pink and it includes mouth of the delaware bay all the way over to the delaware beach. temperat

. that's according to a ruling by federal judge in california. the u.s. district judge made the ruling last night and says she will issue an injunction halting the don't ask don't tell policy. the judge said the policy does not help military readiness but has a harmful effect on the armed services. government lawyers say the judge lacks the authority to issue a nationwide injunction and the issue should be decided by congress. >>> the world is watching and waiting this morning to see the small church in florida goes forward with plans to build the koran tomorrow. yesterday the leader of that church, the reverend terry jones first said he would cancel the event. he made the announcement after thinking developers had agreed to move the site of a propose the mosque and kul tural center from ground zero in new york. a imam close to the project says moving the site and not a done deal. after hearing that, reverend jones said he may still go through with the koran burning. >> now we're a little bit, not totally, a little bit back to square one. we're prayerfully considering what we would do.

overnight but it is getting weak. doug kammerer joins us live now from ocean city. >> hello, guys. i'll tell you what. a much weaker storm. the good news for us, its too much going on out here right now. the surf, obviously very angry and a lot of people coming out to watch how big the waves are. they have been huge during the afternoon. i have to tell you they've started to decrease. high tide was about 15 minutes ago. we're starting to see that ocean recede a little bit and become a little less angry. one thing the life guards want you to know, the beach is open. the water, however, is closed out there right now. that's why you don't see anybody out there. they're not even letting surfers out there. earl now a category 1 storm with winds at 85 miles an hour, making its way toward the north and east and well away from our area. let's show you what is happening and you can see it on the infrared satellite picture. still, a very strong storm. still a hurricane but once again, weakening down to a category 1. it will continue to make its way to the east. here's the radar. again, most
